A toilet that won’t flush right is one of those problems that goes from minor to urgent fast. Sometimes it is a two-minute fix you can do yourself. Sometimes it is a sign of something deeper in the line. Here is how to tell which, and what to do about it.
First, what kind of “won’t flush” is it?
The fix depends on the symptom:
- Weak or partial flush (water swirls but does not clear the bowl)
- Slow flush (drains, but sluggishly)
- No flush at all (handle does nothing, or the bowl fills and does not empty)
- Backs up or overflows (water rises instead of draining)
That last one, water rising and backing up, is the one to take seriously. It often points to a clog further down the line, not just the toilet.
The common causes, easiest first
1. Not enough water in the tank
Lift the tank lid. The water should sit about an inch below the top of the overflow tube. If it is low, the fill valve or float may be set wrong, so the tank does not send enough water to power a full flush. Adjusting the float is a simple fix.
2. A flapper closing too soon

3. Clogged rim jets
Under the rim of the bowl are small holes that direct water during a flush. Over time, mineral buildup from Durham’s hard water clogs them, weakening the flush. A little cleaning with a wire and vinegar can restore the flow.
4. A partial clog in the toilet or drain
If the bowl drains slowly or backs up, there is likely a clog in the trap or the drain line. A good plunger clears many of these. A closet auger (toilet snake) handles the tougher ones.
5. A deeper drain or sewer problem
If plunging does not work, or if other drains in the house are also slow, the problem is past the toilet, in the main line. That is a job for drain cleaning, and if multiple fixtures back up at once, it can signal a main-line clog that needs a camera to diagnose.
